The Rev. Dr. Dave Richardson ’71 published his book, How to Know for Sure, earlier this year through Resource Publications, and imprint of Wipf and Stock Publishers. “This book takes the words attributed to Jesus in the Bible; provides a logical explanation for creation and gives the reader a way to know for sure if they are bound for heaven or bound for hell,” Richardson says. The book can be purchased by mail (address: How to Know, P.O. Box 5003, Marietta, OH 45750; copies are $15 each).
Diana Parsell ’74 celebrated her book, Eliza Scidmore: The Trailblazing Journalist Behind Washington’s Cherry Trees, which was released on March 1st and published by Oxford University Press. Parsell says the book details the “life story of the American woman whose best-known legacy was her key role in bringing Japanese cherry trees to Washington, D.C. The book, a product of a decade of research, includes many new findings about Scidmore (1856-1928), including her work as a pioneering female journalist and a world traveler who published books on Alaska, Japan, Java, China, and India.” Learn more about the book and how to purchase it at Parsell’s website www.dianaparsell.com.
Dr. Bev Hogue, McCoy Professor of English, has edited the new textbook, Teaching Comedy, published through Modern Language Association. “Some factors make this publication unique for MC,” Hogue says. “First, it’s published by the MLA, one of the largest and most influential academic organizations on the planet. Second, several MC faculty and alumni were involved. Jaime Cleland, an alum who works as an acquisitions editor at MLA, guided the project through its early stages. Jeff Cordell, an alum and former faculty member, contributed a chapter, and current faculty member Andy Felt also contributed a chapter. This project has been in the works since 2018. During my Spring 2019 sabbatical, I read and organized submissions and wrote the full outline and prospectus, which went through the first stage of peer review at the MLA. The first draft of the manuscript was completed when the pandemic struck in 2020, and suddenly everyone involved in the project had to shift their way of working and had little time for revision or editing. So there were some pandemic-related delays, but eventually we got back on track and I'm excited to see it finally coming to fruition this fall.” The book can be purchased through Modern Language Association, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.
Grace Johnson, McCoy Professor of Accounting, co-authored the book, IFRS Principles of Accounting — With Keywords in Korean, which is available in Korea. “Now in its fifth edition, I began working with the two primary authors on the third edition. Aimed at Korean undergraduate students, the text is completely in English but with (as the title states) accounting key vocabulary in Korean. Top Korean universities teach many of their business courses in English to prepare Korean students for a global workplace. It is an honor to work with the two respected Korean professors, Soon Suk Yoon and Hyo Jin Kim, on this textbook.”

Forty-six million people: That’s an estimate of how many lives Norman Rose ’58, D.O., FACOS, FICS, DFACOS, have benefited throughout his career — in his surgical practice and through the thousands of osteopathic physicians he’s helped train since graduating in 1963 from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, now Des Moines University (DMU). Dr. Rose built his illustrious career on his twin passions of osteopathic medicine and teaching. A leader in osteopathic medical organizations, he currently is a clinical professor of surgery at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Davie, Florida, and formerly a clinical professor at Larkin University in Miami, Barry University in Miami, Florida, and Kaiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He’s also academic director emeritus of the general surgery residency program, which he founded, at Larkin Community Hospital. Dr. Rose now has yet another title to add to his distinguished resumé: The DMU Board of Trustees named him a Pioneer of Osteopathic Medicine, an honor given to a very select group of distinguished alumni and faculty who have achieved national prominence through contributions to the art and science of medicine, to the advancement of scientific knowledge and to the enhancement of human welfare through public service. Dr. Rose is only the seventh individual to receive this honor.

The couple live on Nolan Circle in Devola and are currently very much enjoying the peace and quiet (no airplane paths overhead) and friendly neighbors nearby. They both marvel at the ease of getting around Marietta, no long traffic tie-ups, etc., the beauty and individuality of the older homes in downtown Marietta, especially, and the friendly people of Marietta, plus, lower cost quality housing than on the East Coast.
